What Will I Learn?

As a student in the Marine Mechanical Design Program (MMD) you will learn the fundamentals of designing ship and offshore structures, mechanical systems and equipment. You will learn how to use the latest 3D modeling programs and how to develop 3D models of ship machinery spaces such as engine rooms.

You will learn to design the different piping systems starting with single line diagrams and then progress into full 3D models. You will learn how to select equipment such as large engines for super tankers and pumps to help transport fluids around the ship.

The instructors are experienced designers and engineers in the shipbuilding industry who will help guide your through the design process and teach you how to solve problems.

Starting in the second year of your program you will start your final design project by designing the piping and HVAC systems for your chosen ship type. Students take pride in this rewarding part of the program that results in a final 3D model of a ship’s machinery spaces.
