MESD Utilized Software

MESD Utilized Software

Students enrolled in the MESD Diploma Program will be trained to effectively use software that is commonly used in industry, including:

Adobe Acrobat X Pro

Adobe® Acrobat® X Pro software lets you deliver professional PDF communications. Create and edit PDF files with rich media included, share information more securely, and gather feedback more efficiently. MESD students will use this software to create professional-level reports and drawings (with the aid of AutoCAD) for many of their assignments and design project submittals.

AutoCAD 2012

Autodesk has been bringing efficiencies to the design process for more than 28 years. Used by millions of people globally, AutoCAD® software is a world-leading design and documentation solution. Offering robust 3D free-form design tools and powerful drafting and documentation capabilities, AutoCAD drives design innovation for companies of all sizes in almost all industries. MESD students use AutoCAD to prepare most of their drawing assignments and design projects.

Desire2Learn (D2L)

When you begin your studies at the Marine Institute, you will be given access to Memorial University's D2L system. D2L is a course management system that is used for students enrolled in online courses. Many instructors in face-to-face and web-enhanced courses use D2L to provide course materials to their students online. Instructors have the option of requesting that their course be available online (blended classroom). Many of the courses taught in the classroom now contain D2L elements, such as course outlines, schedules, course notes, course resources (content), a place for students to submit assignments and receive instructor feedback (dropbox), and a place for students to view their grades in each course (grades), plus other features that may vary by course.

General Hydrostatics (GHS)

Creative Systems is the originator of GHS, the world-famous PC-based simulator of vessels in fluids and fluids in vessels - for ships, yachts, docks, drilling platforms, buoys, tanks, etc. - answering such questions as:

  • How deep and at what attitude will it float?
  • How much load will it carry?
  • When will it capsize?
  • Will it survive if damaged?

MESD students will receive training on this software as part of their stability education.

Microsoft Office Professional

Building on the familiar tools that many people already know, the Microsoft Office system includes programs, servers, services, and solutions designed to work together to help address a broad array of business problems. Used together, the Microsoft Office system can help you address business needs ranging from personal productivity management to complex project management. MESD students are taught how to prepare technical reports using MS Word, and learn how use MS Excel to program spreadsheets to perform design calculations.
