Program Description

The global aquaculture industry is expanding as the demand for food proteins increases worldwide. Highly qualified practitioners with the knowledge and operational skills in production, management and governance in the aquaculture and related fields will be required. Designed for degree-holding students interested in specializing in the field of aquaculture development, practice and management, the Graduate Diploma in Marine Studies (Aquaculture) offers current and relevant knowledge, combined with technical and practical experience, to prepare graduates for a range of careers in aquaculture and related fields.

The program will provide a solid foundation in environmental stewardship, sustainability, animal health and husbandry, nutrition and feeding, aquaculture engineering and systems operation, and farming technology and techniques. Graduates will also be equipped to collaborate and communicate with diverse aquaculture stakeholder groups to achieve common goals.

Program Structure

The program consists of 21 credit hours of course work that includes a 12-week internship. In-depth coverage of the discipline through course work, lab and field components, as well as the internship, provides the opportunity to put into practice the hands-on, applied and management skills necessary for success in the program. The diploma may be completed on a full or part-time basis.

What Faculty Say

This program affords students the opportunity to learn through experiences in the classroom, lab and field. It is all about learning through doing and creating a bridge for students between academia (theoretical) and the dynamic and innovative aquaculture industry (the practical). Smaller class sizes provide an inclusive and collaborative environment for students from diverse backgrounds and those with various learning styles.
