Course Description

This course comprises five days of planning, discussion, and the examination of the skills and knowledge that a bridge team must have for the safe and efficient transit of a ship in restricted and coastal waters. Transportation Investigation Board reports indicate that most accidents are related to human error. Although human error is not clearly defined by such authorities, it is generally considered to have to do with management skills, operator status, the working environment, knowledge, and decision making. Most accidents at sea occur in confined and converging-traffic areas. This is where the bridge team has its greatest workload and require the effective use of all resources, including human resources, to function as a team in the successful completion of a transit.

This course directs the attention of the participants to such topics as bridge organization, standard operating procedures, passage planning, positional and situational awareness, as well as the management of those persons who make up the team. Reviewing and focusing on the task of planning, executing and monitoring the progress of a vessel in asimulated environment, should heighten the awareness of all members of these teams of the constant need for vigilance with respect to the safe operation of their vessels, especially in high risk areas.

Those attending the course will participate in planning, discussing, monitoring, executing, briefing, and debriefing in a realistic teamwork environment.
