MI Exceptional Service Award

Terms of Reference and Information Sheet

Concept of the Award

The Marine Institute Award for Exceptional Service is presented each year to recognize employees who have demonstrated exceptional service and/or who have made significant contributions to the Marine Institute and/or University communities beyond that normally expected for their positions.

Criteria for Nomination

The award is open to currently employed non-instructional employees at the Marine Institute (including members of NAPE 7850, Research and Technical Personnel, and non-bargaining staff members) who have been employed at the Marine Institute for a minimum of three (3) years prior to nomination and who have not previously received the award.

A person may be nominated multiple years providing they haven't received an award.

The Selection Committee will consider nominees who: demonstrate commitment to excellence in their role within the Marine Institute and University communities; regularly and consistently exceed expectations and/or perform actions of significant merit, which are over and above the nominee's normal employment responsibilities, and benefit the Marine Institute and University communities.

Specifically, the award is based on evidence of continued excellence, in excess of the required level of performance in any one or more of the following areas:

  • Providing excellent service to employees, students, industry clients, alumni and visitors.
  • Enhancing the quality of life for students, employees, industry clients, or visitors.
  • Developing new programs and services or making significant improvement to existing programs or services.
  • Advancing the reputation of the Marine Institute and Memorial University internally, locally, provincially, nationally, and/or internationally.

In its deliberation, the Selection Committee may consider the following:

  • breadth and depth of the impact of the nominees’ service or achievement,
  • strength and frequency of support in the nominations,
  • nominee’s employment record at Memorial University, and
  • acts that warrant special consideration.

Nomination Procedure

  • The nomination package should be submitted to the Manager, Human Resources by May 15, 2026.

  • Nominations may come from alumni, faculty, staff, students, industry clients and other members of the University community.
  • The nominee’s manager must be included as either a nominator or a signatory on a letter of support.
  • The nomination is limited to the completion of the nomination form, a cover letter, and one letter of support only, however the letters of support may be endorsed by numerous persons.
  • The cover letter must be no more than 750 words in length.
