Prerequisites

Dynamic Positioning - Induction Course;
30 days Dynamic Positioning Sea-time (If initial Induction Course completed prior to January 2015);
60 days DP Sea-time (If initial Induction Course completed after January 2015);
Completion of required Nautical Institute Logbook tasks

Course Description

This course is designed to give the student further training in the operation of Dynamic Positioning (DP) systems for different types of vessels. It will give the student an in-depth understanding of the operation of the DP system. The course will include exercises on a DP simulator that will allow the student to plan and carry out a variety of routine DP operations as well as observe and develop responses to various emergency and failure situations.

Course Outline

At the end of the course the student should:

  • Carry out operational planning, risk assessment and hazard identification tasks.
  • Set up the DP system for a particular task.
  • Operate the communications.
  • Analyze the trends.
  • Discuss systems failures.
  • Decide on courses of action because of systems failures.
  • React to alarms and printer readout.
  • Initiate DP Alert status alarms.
  • React to all events occurring
  • Operate the desk under normal and pressured conditions.
  • Practice effective teamwork.
  • Apply the lessons learned to date.
