This course develops an understanding of statical stability theory,criteria for stability assessment and rules and regulations impacting onvessel stability. Emphasis is placed on practical application of the theory to calculate statical stability parameters under specific conditions of load and then compare this to accepted stability standards.

• To enable participants to understand the terminology used to describe the hydrostatic and stability characteristics of floating bodies.
• To enable participants to understand the significance of the relative positions of the centre of buoyancy, centre of gravity and metacentre on transverse and longitudinal stability.
• To develop in the participants an understanding of, and an ability to perform, calculations related to initial stability and how the additional forces applied through anchor handling and towing activities affect the vessel's stability. 
• To develop familiarity with the information contained in a vessel's Marine Stability Operations Manual and an ability to use this information to calculate a vessel's stability conditions.
• To enable students to understand and interpret information provided from a Shipboard Stability Computer.
