Transport Canada Training Certificate

Prerequisites

A person must be at least 16 years of age to take the FRB course Training certificate in Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than Fast Rescue Boats (PSC) (or equivalent) Before attending this course, you must take an online fatigue management course from the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety. A Candidate Document Number (CDN) is required to complete this course. If you already have a Candidate Document Number (CDN), there is no cost to complete the Fatigue Management course. If you don’t yet have a CDN, you can apply for one through Transport Canada using this link. To access the Fatigue Management at Sea course, visit the CCOHS registration page and follow these steps: • Step 1: Register with the CCOHS. • Step 2: Sign-in using the password provided in the registration confirmation email. Please note, free access is provided to Canadian seafarers courtesy of Transport Canada Marine Safety and Security. Once you’re done the course, make sure to print a copy of your training certificate. This certificate proves that you’ve completed the training and you will need to provide a copy to shortcoursehelp@mi.mun.ca prior to attending.  Link: 

Course Description

This course is designed to provide personnel with the theoretical and practical knowledge and skills necessary to participate as members of Fast Rescue Boat in accordance with STCW ‘95 A-VI/2-2.

Course Outline

To enable course participants to learn about, understand and become proficient in:

  • The construction and outfit of fast rescue boats and individual items of their equipment
  • Particular characteristics and facilities of fast rescue boats
  • Taking safety pre-cautions during launch and recovery of a fast rescue boat
  • Properly righting a capsized fast rescue boat
  • Properly handling a fast rescue boat in prevailing adverse weather and sea conditions
  • The navigational and safety equipment in a fast rescue boat
  • Search patters and environmental factors affecting their execution
  • Assessing the readiness of fast rescue boats and related equipment for immediate use
  • The maintenance, emergency repairs, normal inflating and deflation of buoyancy compartments of inflated fast rescue boats
  • Properly starting and operating a fast rescue boat engine and its accessories
