Course Description

The purpose of this course is to provide an in-depth analysis of the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea with Canadian Modifications, 1983 that will allow participants to apply the rules in practical situations. In addition, an examination of the principles to be observed when carrying out a navigational watch as outlined in the STCW Code and bridge teamwork procedures will be provided.

Course Outline

1.0 International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea with Canadian Modifications, 1983 and the Practical Application of Collision Avoidance Maneuvers
2.0 The importance of Radar and its Application Under the Collision Regulations for the Detection of Close Quarters Situations and Collision Avoidance Maneuvers
3.0 Lights, Shapes and Sound Signals for Restricted and Unrestricted Visibility
4.0 The International Distress Signals with Canadian Modifications
5.0 Principles to be Observed in Keeping a Navigational Watch at Sea, at Anchor and in Port as set out in STCW Code Section A-VIII/2 and STCW Code B- VIII/2
6.0 Bridge Teamwork Procedures Including Proper Handover of the Watch, Look-outs, and Effective Communication Between Bridge Team Members
