Prerequisites

  • a person must be of at least 16 years of age to take the REF FRB course
  • a person must hold a training certificate in MED with respect to Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boats (FRB) (or equivalent) to take the REF FRB course
Before attending this course, you must take an online fatigue management course from the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety. A Candidate Document Number (CDN) is required to complete this course. If you already have a Candidate Document Number (CDN), there is no cost to complete the Fatigue Management course. If you don’t yet have a CDN, you can apply for one through Transport Canada using this link. To access the Fatigue Management at Sea course, visit the CCOHS registration page and follow these steps: • Step 1: Register with the CCOHS. • Step 2: Sign-in using the password provided in the registration confirmation email. Please note, free access is provided to Canadian seafarers courtesy of Transport Canada Marine Safety and Security. Once you’re done the course, make sure to print a copy of your training certificate. This certificate proves that you’ve completed the training and you will need to provide a copy to shortcoursehelp@mi.mun.ca prior to attending.  Link: 

Course Description

This refresher training course is designed to comply with the regulations and to refresh the seafarers’ skills to undertake the tasks, duties and responsibilities necessary to participate as members of Fast Rescue Boat in accordance with Chapter VI, Section A-VI/2 of the STCW Convention, including 2010 Manila Amendments.

Course Outline

To enable course participants to acquire knowledge, understanding and proficiency in:

  • Particular characteristics and facilities of fast rescue boats
  • Safety precautions during launch and recovery of a fast rescue boat
  • Maneuvering a fast rescue boat
  • Towing
  • Righting a capsized fast rescue boat
  • Navigational and safety equipment available in a fast rescue boat
  • Search patterns and rescue
