Prerequisites

Person must be at least 16 years of age to take the PSC course.
Person must hold valid MED A1 or MED A2 or STCW Basic Safety training certificate or equivalent. Before attending this course, you must take an online fatigue management course from the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety. A Candidate Document Number (CDN) is required to complete this course. If you already have a Candidate Document Number (CDN), there is no cost to complete the Fatigue Management course. If you don’t yet have a CDN, you can apply for one through Transport Canada using this link. To access the Fatigue Management at Sea course, visit the CCOHS registration page and follow these steps: • Step 1: Register with the CCOHS. • Step 2: Sign-in using the password provided in the registration confirmation email. Please note, free access is provided to Canadian seafarers courtesy of Transport Canada Marine Safety and Security. Once you’re done the course, make sure to print a copy of your training certificate. This certificate proves that you’ve completed the training and you will need to provide a copy to shortcoursehelp@mi.mun.ca prior to attending.  Link: 

Course Description

This course meets the requirements of Table A-VI/2-1 of the STCW Convention Specification of the minimum standard of competence in survival craft and rescue boats other than fast rescue boats as noted in TP 4957 in Marine Personnel Regulations in Basic Safety and in Marine Fire Fighting.

Course Outline

To enable course participants to learn about, understand and become proficient in:

  • construction and outfit of survival craft and rescue boats and individual items of their equipment;
  • particular characteristics and facilities of survival craft and rescue boats;
  • various types of devices used to launch survival craft and rescue boats;
  • methods of launching survival craft into a rough sea;
  • methods of recovering survival craft;
  • actions to take after leaving the ship;
  • methods of launching and recovering rescue boats in a rough sea;
  • handling survival craft in rough weather;
  • how to use painter, sea anchor and all other equipment;
  • how to apportion food and water in survival craft;
  • action to take to maximize detectability and location of survival craft;
  • method of helicopter rescue;
  • effects of hypothermia and its prevention, use of protective covers and garments, including immersion suits and thermal protective aids;
  • use of rescue boats and motor lifeboats for marshalling liferents and rescue of survivors and persons in the sea;
  • beaching survival craft;
  • methods of starting and operating a survival craft engine and its accessories together with how to use the fire extinguisher provided;
  • radio lifesaving appliances carried in survival craft, including satellite EPIRBs and SARTs;
  • pyrotechnic distress signals;
  • how to use first-aid and resuscitation techniques;
  • managing injured persons, including how to control bleeding and shock.
