Course Description

This is an introductory course designed to provide students with an understanding of the terminology and basic principles of hydrostatics in preparation for more advanced topics relating to stability management of Mobile Offshore Drilling Units

Course Outline

  • To enable participants to understand the terminology used to describe the hydrostatic and stability characteristics of floating bodies.
  • To enable participants to understand the significance of the relative positions of the centre of buoyancy, centre of gravity, and metacentre on transverse and longitudinal stability.
  • To develop in the participants an understanding of, and an ability to perform, calculations related to initial stability and equilibrium in the transverse direction.
  • To develop in the participants an understanding of equilibrium in the longitudinal direction and an ability to perform calculations related to longitudinal stability.
  • To develop in the participants a familiarity with the information contained in a vessel’s Marine Operations Manual and an ability to use this information to calculate a vessel’s stability condition.
