MI and the Town of Holyrood entered a new five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to bolster ocean-related education, technology, research, and economic development in the Holyrood region
Today, Memorial University’s Marine Institute and the Town of Holyrood entered a new five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), strengthening the long-standing relationship between the two organizations to bolster ocean-related education, technology, research, and economic development in the Holyrood region.
The MOU builds on MI and the Town’s previous collaboration efforts to promote sustainable ocean practices and economic development and reinforces their commitment to blue ocean initiatives, youth and community engagement, and the development of rural communities in Newfoundland and Labrador.
MI will continue its educational outreach with local youth and schools to learn about the blue economy along with career and educational opportunities to participate in the oceans sector. Research collaboration on projects related to ocean technology, ocean safety, efficiency, and resource sustainability will also be a focus. MI will continue its participation in local events and initiatives, such as The Launch Open House and the Tidy Town Beach Clean up.
The Town will further raise the profile of both parties to support the growth of the local and regional ocean economy by fostering partnerships and collaboration on new infrastructure and initiatives that support the Marine Institute’s activities at The Launch and Centre for Applied Ocean Technology, which undertakes research and development in ocean mapping and ocean observation.
The MOU was signed by Dr. Paul Brett, vice-president, Memorial University (Marine Institute) and Mayor Gary Goobie, Town of Holyrood, at The Launch Doors Open event.
